Community Law & Mediation’s Submission on the U.N. Call for Input: Planning and the right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment

Our submission to the United Nations call for input on planning and the right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment addresses our concerns about how access to justice is guaranteed in planning processes in Ireland.

A core tenet of CLM’s work is the principle that access to justice is essential for the full realisation of fundamental rights for all within a socially just and ecologically sustainable society.

Since the Centre for Environmental Justice’s establishment in 2021, CLM has become increasingly concerned that the Irish Government treats access to justice in planning processes as an aspiration rather than an obligation of European Union and international law.

This submission will address these concerns and examine the impact recent legislative changes on access to justice could have on the realisation of the right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment.
