The Centre for Environmental Justice’s response to the draft Sectoral Adaptation Plan for Biodiversity 2025

In 2023, the Citizens’ Assembly recommended that the State take decisive and urgent action to address biodiversity loss. With 85% of Ireland’s EU-protected habitats in unfavourable status and 46% demonstrating ongoing declines,  the establishment of clear, measurable goals to strengthen adaptation efforts across the biodiversity sector is of the utmost importance.

In responding to the National Parks and Wildlife Service’s consultation on the draft Sectoral Adaptation Plan for Biodiversity 2025 (BSAP), CLM expressed its concern surrounding the absence of specific targets, monitoring and enforcement mechanisms, and reference to legal obligations.

CLM recommended that the plan be revised to ensure specific, timebound and measurable objectives that align with the State’s national and international legal obligations.
