Laura – Social housing
Laura moved into her partner of 27 years’ local authority home, as his physical and mental health had deteriorated significantly as a result of Covid. Prior to this, our client had been on the housing list since 2005 without ever having received an offer of housing. In December 2024, Laura’s partner passed away unexpectantly and before the couple had completed the paperwork in relation to adding her to the tenancy.
Eviction proceedings were issued against Laura. As she did not earn sufficient money to rent privately and could not access any alternative accommodation, her only alternative was to present as homeless.
Laura was distraught when she came to our service and felt like she could not go on. She was worried not only about losing her home, but that she would be unable to continue with her job as she was fearful and embarrassed that her employers would find out she was living in a homeless shelter.
CLM defended the eviction proceedings which were struck out in February 2025, and our client signed a tenancy agreement to remain on in her home.
Following settlement of this case Laura told us “now I have my home and my job is safe I can grieve my partner”
